Sport at BPS

At Banstead Prep School sport plays a vital part in every child’s development. Guided by our belief that every pupil should be “Free to be Me,” we provide an environment where children can grow in confidence, build resilience, and discover their unique strengths through physical activity and teamwork.

Our full-sized Astroturf pitch sits at the heart of a suite of facilities designed to inspire and challenge through sport. Used for hockey and football, this all-weather space offers the opportunity for outdoor sport all year round and is also where our home fixtures take place against other local schools.

For track and field, we offer dedicated areas for long jump and high jump, along with a 200m field running track used during the summer term. Our netball and tennis courts are available throughout the school year for lessons, training, and fixtures.

In addition, our spacious sports hall provides an excellent environment for a wide range of indoor activities, including basketball, indoor football, gymnastics, tennis, netball, and cricket, with nets and gym equipment supporting high-quality PE lessons. A dedicated dance studio offers a more intimate space, perfect for dance, fitness, and small group activities.

Our 17.5-metre swimming pool gives children the opportunity to develop their skills from a young age, progressing from beginner strokes to confident swimmers who can compete in galas as part of the school’s successful swim squad. As part of our commitment to the local community, the pool is also hired by other schools and clubs for lessons and training.

The newly built pavilion, equipped with modern changing rooms and toilet facilities, offers comfort and convenience for children and visiting schools. This space supports the practical needs of our busy sporting calendar.

Sport plays a vital role in nurturing the physical, social, and emotional development of every child. Whether they’re scoring a winning goal, diving into the pool, or simply learning the importance of fair play, our children are empowered to grow and thrive in a safe, supportive environment.

Meet the Sports Team

Gavin Jones

Gavin Jones at Banstead Prep

In his role as Head of Sport, Gavin oversees the planning and delivery of PE, Games and Swimming. He has experience leading successful departments that have seen boys and girls perform on the national stage and achieve sports scholarships. He is passionate about Sport and believes in the ‘Sport for All’ philosophy and challenging all pupils to reach their potential.

“I am relishing working at a school with such ambition and with first-class facilities that promotes progress and allows the children to access a wide range of sports and activities.”

Zoe Herbert

Zoe believes that providing a stimulating physical education programme in school is essential to give individuals the confidence to participate in sport throughout their lives.  She competed in many sports throughout her childhood and still loves to compete in netball and fencing outside of school.

“Rather than a ‘must win’ attitude, I hope to encourage the children to develop sportsmanship, teamwork and personal growth, which can be transferred to everyday life.”

She also feels that swimming is an essential life skill for children.  “Seeing students grow in confidence and perfect their technique in the water is fantastically rewarding.”
