Ethos, Aims & Values

Our vision is to be a school that challenges, develops and nurtures every child, where every child is free to be themselves. We constantly strive to change and to improve, to deliver a modern education that shapes children’s character and prepares them for an exciting future, encouraging them to aim high and dream big.

Our beliefs:

Be Ready, Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Yourself, Be Kind

Our Ethos

We have a central ambition to nurture independent learners and allow all children to develop their wonderfully unique characters. In a world where academic achievement is now rightly valued equally to the qualities, attributes and soft skills we possess. We strive to create an environment that adopts a truly holistic approach to education. Our learner powers provide the thread that connects the foundational skills set out in the EYFS to the qualities identified by the World Economic Forum as necessary and desirable for success in the professional world of today and beyond. These skills are taught implicitly and explicitly across all areas of our curriculum. Children understand what they are, what they look like, why they are important and how we develop them. Staff create learning opportunities that nurture curiosity and questioning skills, allowing children to make associations across subjects and experiences, transferring these skills with increasing competence as they move through our school.

How we Learn

Free to be ME is how we want everyone in our school community to feel. Celebrating that everyone is wonderfully different and that we are all on our own journey of discovery and progress. Our school community reflects the diversity of the real world so we ensure everything we do supports difference and celebrates that we are all unique. Our school beliefs are the foundation for a community that is nurturing and supportive, committed to helping everyone grow. Teachers are adaptive and innovative, engaging all pupils regardless of age, academic profile or need. Support, extension, differentiation and challenge is the responsibility of all educators at BPS and we share knowledge and experience to provide the best possible learning opportunities for our children. Ensuring that our children celebrate their uniqueness and understand how they learn through metacognition allows progress to be made by all. Metacognition enables children to have an awareness of thought processes and an understanding of their thinking. Our children will be encouraged to use vocabulary and tools to understand better how they think and regulate their own approach to learning, evaluate different learning strategies and choose the most effective ones for a particular task. This depth of understanding creates a community where empathy and tolerance are central to all we do.

Why we Play

School should be fun! Happy children flourish and happy children learn. We are passionate about cherishing childhood and fundamentally believe in the power of play. At BPS we inspire children to be curious, be creative in all they do and understand that trial and error are the fundamentals of learning. We create a learning environment that facilitates a play-based approach in age-appropriate ways that foster a love for discovery and exploration. Teachers interact rather than interrupt and engage and support learning that is directed and led by the imagination and curiosity of the children. Through developmentally complex approaches we evolve play as experimentation, investigation, and exploration. Encouraging our children to use their knowledge so solve problems, make cross curricular associations and links and nurture academic agility and resilience.

The school's philosophy recognises the value of diversity and the individuality of everyone.  It is well understood and consistently demonstrated by staff and pupils.  This successfully generates an atmosphere of mutual respect that permeates the entire school commuity. ISI Inspection November 2024
