Sports

At Banstead Prep School, sport isn’t just a subject – it’s a way of life. We believe in “Sport for All”, and from the moment children join us in Nursery, physical education becomes an exciting and inclusive part of their school journey.

Our youngest pupils begin with weekly PE sessions in our dedicated sports hall, and as they move up the school, they benefit from regular timetabled sports lessons right through to Year 6. Each year ends with a joyful Celebration of Sport, recognising every child’s progress, participation, and personal achievements.

Led by our passionate Head of Sport, Gavin Jones, we champion the idea that every child should be encouraged to reach their full potential, whether they’re natural athletes or just discovering the joy of movement. Guided by our ethos of being “Free to be Me,” we see sport as a way to build confidence, resilience, and team spirit in a fun and supportive environment.

Facilities That Inspire

Our fantastic sports facilities mean there’s something for everyone, all year round:

  • A full-sized Astroturf pitch hosts hockey and football matches, including home fixtures with other schools.

  • A 200m running track, long jump and high jump areas for summer term athletics.

  • Netball and tennis courts used for both lessons and fixtures throughout the year.

  • A spacious sports hall for indoor sports like basketball, gymnastics, indoor football, tennis, and cricket.

  • A dedicated dance studio perfect for dance, fitness sessions, and small group activities.

  • Our own 17.5-metre swimming pool, where children learn to swim and can progress to our successful school swim squad.

We’ve even got a newly built pavilion with modern changing facilities, supporting our busy calendar of sports events and visiting teams.

Growing Through Sport

Whether it’s scoring a winning goal, diving into the pool for the first time, or learning the value of teamwork and fair play, sport at Banstead Prep is all about helping children grow. It plays a key role in developing physical, social, and emotional wellbeing, all while having fun and feeling proud of what they achieve.

At Banstead Prep, every child gets the chance to get involved, feel included, and discover their own unique strengths through sport.

Meet the Sports Team

Gavin Jones

Gavin Jones at Banstead Prep

In his role as Head of Sport, Gavin oversees the planning and delivery of PE, Games and Swimming. He has experience leading successful departments that have seen boys and girls perform on the national stage and achieve sports scholarships. He is passionate about Sport and believes in the ‘Sport for All’ philosophy and challenging all pupils to reach their potential.

“I am relishing working at a school with such ambition and with first-class facilities that promotes progress and allows the children to access a wide range of sports and activities.”

Zoe Herbert

Zoe believes that providing a stimulating physical education programme in school is essential to give individuals the confidence to participate in sport throughout their lives.  She competed in many sports throughout her childhood and still loves to compete in netball and fencing outside of school.

“Rather than a ‘must win’ attitude, I hope to encourage the children to develop sportsmanship, teamwork and personal growth, which can be transferred to everyday life.”

She also feels that swimming is an essential life skill for children.  “Seeing students grow in confidence and perfect their technique in the water is fantastically rewarding.”
