Our Learner Powers

Helping children become confident learners for life

At Banstead Prep, we believe that education is about more than what children learn. It is also about how they learn, how they approach challenges and how they work with others. Our eight Learner Powers are at the heart of this approach. They provide a thread that runs from our youngest children in the Early Years through to Year 6, connecting the foundational skills of the EYFS with the qualities and transferable skills that will help children thrive in an ever-changing world. From curiosity and communication to resilience and independence, our Learner Powers help children understand the qualities of a successful learner and, just as importantly, how they can develop these qualities themselves. These skills are taught both explicitly and implicitly across our curriculum and throughout everyday life at Banstead Prep. Children learn what each Learner Power means, what it looks like, why it matters and how they can put it into practice.

For our youngest children, these ideas are brought to life through eight memorable animal characters. The children get to know Leo, Greta, Inca, Buddy, Echo, Charlie, Ajadi and Lilibet, giving them a fun and accessible way to understand and talk about their own learning.

As children grow, the characters provide a familiar thread while their understanding of each Learner Power develops with them.

Meet our Learner Powers

Leo the Proud Peacock

Leo helps children understand the importance of taking pride – in who they are, in their work, in their environment and in the achievements of others.

Being a Proud Peacock means taking time and care, recognising your own successes and celebrating the happiness and success of those around you.

Greta the Resilient Squirrel

Greta reminds children that challenges and mistakes are part of learning.

Our Resilient Squirrels are brave enough to give things a go, ask for help when they need it, bounce back from challenges and keep trying. They learn to challenge themselves while also being kind to themselves when things don’t go to plan.

Inca the Adaptable Octopus

Inca shows children that sometimes we need to change our approach.

Our Adaptable Octopuses reflect on their work and look for ways to improve, even when something is already great. They cope with change, take risks by trying different approaches and recognise that they can learn from others.

Buddy the Collaborative Ant

Buddy reminds us that we are stronger together.

Our Collaborative Ants listen carefully, respond respectfully and support those around them. They understand that working as part of a team sometimes means compromising, showing empathy and recognising the value that everyone brings.

Echo the Communicative Dolphin

Echo helps children understand that good communication is about both speaking and listening.

Our Communicative Dolphins share ideas, express themselves clearly and think carefully about what they are communicating. They listen and respond to others with kindness, respect and empathy, using positive body language along the way.

Charlie the Curious Chimp

Charlie encourages children to wonder, question and discover.

Our Curious Chimps ask questions to find out about new things, come up with their own ideas and use creativity to solve problems. They make links between new learning and what they already know and understand that curiosity helps them to learn and grow.

Ajadi the Independent Snow Leopard

Ajadi encourages children to think for themselves and have a go.

Our Independent Snow Leopards solve problems, find what they need and organise themselves. They ask questions to help themselves and others, develop their own ideas and have the confidence to be themselves – embracing our Free to be Me approach.

Lilibet the Leadership Wolf

Lilibet shows children that leadership isn’t about being bossy or being in charge.

Our Leadership Wolves are kind, respectful and helpful. They listen to others, show empathy and lead by example – doing the right thing even when nobody is watching. They are also pioneers, willing to try new things and encourage others along the way.

Learner Powers in action

Our Learner Powers are woven through every part of life at Banstead Prep. Teachers create opportunities for children to develop these qualities across all areas of the curriculum, encouraging them to ask questions, make connections, solve problems, work with others and reflect on their learning.

A child might be a Curious Chimp when they ask an unexpected question in Science, a Collaborative Ant when they work with classmates to solve a problem, or a Resilient Squirrel when they keep going after finding something difficult. The same Learner Power can be useful in completely different situations. A child might use their communication skills in a drama performance, their adaptability when plans change on a trip, or their independence when tackling a new challenge. Our teachers help children recognise these connections so that, over time, they become increasingly confident at transferring their Learner Powers between subjects, situations and experiences.

From the EYFS to the future

The foundations begin in our Early Years, where children develop skills in communication, relationships, independence, confidence and managing themselves and their learning. Our Learner Powers build on these foundations as children progress through Banstead Prep. They help children develop transferable skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity, curiosity, resilience, adaptability and leadership – qualities that will support them not only throughout their education, but throughout their lives.

We want our children to leave Banstead Prep knowing themselves, understanding how they learn and having the confidence to face whatever comes next.

Because a great education isn’t just about what you achieve. It’s about the person you become along the way.
