This week in our Be Curious session, Year 1 explored the theme of resilience. After reading The Queen’s Hat in English and discussing the positive and negative effects of the wind, the children were inspired to make something the wind could help with.
We took our learning outside to the school’s wild garden, where the children made wind chimes and kites. Some children practised tying knots and attaching materials without using glue — a tricky skill that required patience and persistence. This hands-on activity not only reinforced their understanding of the wind’s impact but also integrated key aspects of the Year 1 curriculum, such as developing fine motor skills and understanding basic scientific principles.
Resilience isn’t always easy to practise, especially when things feel challenging. But the pride and sense of achievement on the children’s faces when they succeeded showed just how valuable the struggle can be. The children learned that perseverance and a positive attitude can help them overcome obstacles, a lesson that aligns with our school’s ethos of fostering independence and confidence.
Our Be Curious sessions are all about developing confidence, creativity, and perseverance — and Year 1 showed just how capable they are. By engaging in these activities, the children not only met curriculum goals but also developed essential life skills that will serve them well in the future
