Small wins matter- Head’s Desk (01 May 2026)

In a world that often celebrates big achievements and headline successes, it is easy to overlook the small sometimes quiet moments that truly shape a school. This week, I have been reminded that it is often the small wins that matter most.

These moments may not make the front page, but they are everywhere if we take the time to notice them. A child who has been finding mornings difficult arriving on time with a smile.  A child swimming without floats for the first time.  A lesson where engagement is just that little bit higher than it was the week before. These are the building blocks of success.

In schools, progress is rarely a straight line. It is made up of small steps taken consistently over time. Each improvement, no matter how modest, represents effort, resilience, and growth.  When we recognise and celebrate these moments, we reinforce the values we want to see: perseverance, kindness, and pride in doing one’s best.

In school, we make a conscious effort to recognise and celebrate these small wins. Staff send postcards home to acknowledge effort, improvement, and positive attitudes, ensuring that these moments are shared and valued beyond the classroom. Children are nominated by staff to attend the Headteacher’s Hot Chocolate as a special recognition of their contribution to school life, while house points and commendations are awarded daily to celebrate progress, kindness, and commitment. Each week, our Celebration Assembly brings the whole school together to recognise these achievements, reinforcing the message that every step forward matters and every success, no matter how small, is worth celebrating.

Our staff work hard to nurture these small successes.  They know the children so well that they notice the smallest of details, provide encouragement, and create opportunities for every child to move forward.  Their dedication ensures that no step of progress goes unseen.

I suppose it is a good lesson for us as adults too –  to celebrate the small wins –  we are often so busy that life can become overwhelming, but if we take a moment to recognise the small achievements it may help us feel more positive!  Small wins may seem insignificant in isolation, but together they tell a powerful story of growth and community.
