At just 10 years old, Year 5’s Savannya is already playing cricket at a level that would impress many teenagers.
She balances commitments with Banstead Prep’s weekly fixtures, Banstead Cricket Club, and Surrey County Cricket.
“I started playing when I was eight,” Savannya explained, but it was clear from the start that this was more than just a lockdown hobby. She now trains and plays three times a week, often stepping up to represent the U12 boys’ team at Banstead Cricket Club, a testament to her talent and determination.
Savannya has always had this determination that you might not recognise due to her quiet nature. But this came out early on in sports days at school, and especially when she was competing with her older brother.
Savannya is a pace bowler, where athletic ability aids her on the field. But off the pitch, she holds three school records, in long jump, shot put, and vortex showcasing her all-rounded sporting ability. But beyond her natural talent, what shines through is her work ethic and inner drive.
“She’s got this gutsy steel to push herself,” her dad said proudly. “Cricket is not just about playing as a team. When it’s your turn to bowl, all eyes are on you. Savannya’s learned how to handle that pressure and focus on what she can control.”
Savannya says she likes to “focus on her own game” all in aid of winning. That focused mindset has helped her thrive in competitive settings. Looking ahead she’s hoping to continue her cricket journey at high school, with her sights set on a sports scholarship. When she reaches Year 7, Savannya will be eligible for inter-county cricket for Surrey and may even get the opportunity to play at the Oval, a dream for any young Cricketer
Much of Savannya’s success, has been supported by the opportunities she’s had at Banstead Prep. “Last year, the school was invited to a cricket tournament,” her dad recalled. “Savannya was the only girl taking part. Mr Jones, Head of Boys’ Sport, emailed to make sure she was included. That gave her a big confidence boost and really put her on high school’s radar for scholarships.”
Banstead Prep’s excellent sports facilities allow children to explore and thrive across a wide range of sports. But what really makes the difference, according to Savannya’s Dad, is the support Savannya has had to play as often as possible along side her academic commitments. Taking part in weekly cricket fixtures throughout the summer term has helped her to really develop.
Banstead Prep’s strong link with Banstead Cricket Club has helped to create a valuable pathway for young players. Savannya’s father now manages the club’s girls’ development team, which Savannya is part of. “We have three children from Banstead Prep playing in the team. It is one of the best young setups for girls’ cricket in Surrey.”
It is clear that Savannya has been supported in her commitment to Cricket and sport as a whole. Banstead Prep has given her the opportunity to hone her skills and recognise her potential. The balance of team spirit and personal resolve is what Banstead Prep encourages in every child, and for Savannya, it is already paving the way to a bright future in sport.
