How we prepare children for Reception

AT BANSTEAD PREP, WE BELIEVE CHILDREN ARE MOST READY FOR RECEPTION WHEN THEY FEEL CONFIDENT, CURIOUS AND HAPPY TO BE THEMSELVES.

Rather than rushing children towards formal learning, our Early Years approach is built around play, independence and strong relationships. We cherish childhood, celebrate every step of the journey and create an environment where children feel safe to explore, ask questions and grow.

Our EYFS Philosophy: Learning Through Play

Our Early Years ethos is guided by a simple belief: children learn best when they are deeply engaged in play. This shapes everything we do:

  • Play Freely – non-prescribed play every day
  • Interact, Don’t Interrupt – adults engage, support and extend learning
  • Child-Led Learning – children’s interests guide our teaching
  • Curiosity Leads – fostering a love of discovery
  • Kindness Counts – compassion in every interaction
  • All Day Outdoors – nature is part of everyday learning

We create the ‘weather’ around our children – shaping attitudes, confidence and wellbeing through positivity, care and consistency.

A Calm, Purposeful Early Years Environment

Our Early Years spaces are designed with intention.

  • All EYFS classes are on one level, supporting collaboration and smooth transitions
  • Calm, neutral environments help children focus and feel secure
  • Resources and equipment are fully accessible, encouraging independence
  • Children engage in activities based on their own interests and those of others

This environment supports confidence, independence and curiosity from the very start.

Building Independence Every Day

Independence is at the heart of Reception readiness. Children at Banstead Prep are encouraged to:

  • Manage self-care tasks with growing confidence
  • Make choices and take responsibility
  • Ask for help when they need it
  • Try things for themselves, knowing an adult is there to guide and support

We focus on effort and resilience, not speed or perfection.

Supporting the EYFS Areas of Learning

Our Early Years curriculum is rich, balanced and engaging, covering all EYFS areas of learning through play-based experiences.

A Thoughtful Transition from Pre-School to Reception

At Banstead Prep, we use the whole school to enrich learning. Even in Early Years, children benefit from being part of the wider school community and regularly enjoy specialist spaces such as the cooking room and STEM room. They also make full use of our outdoor learning areas and nature-rich environments, as well as the sports hall, dance studio, library and dining hall. This familiarity builds confidence and helps the move into Reception feel natural, positive and exciting.

While preparing children for Reception is important, our vision goes further. From the very beginning, we nurture curiosity, creativity and confidence – skills that support academic success and a lifelong love of learning. With strong foundations built in the Early Years and a broad, modern curriculum, our children go on to make excellent progress throughout the school.
