Thank a Teacher Day – A Moment to Pause, Reflect, and Celebrate- Head’s Desk (19 June 2026)

At BPS, life moves quickly. The rhythm of assemblies, lessons, sport, rehearsals, clubs, and conversations gives shape to our days, and before we quite realise it, another week has passed filled with moments of growth, laughter, and quiet achievement. As we race towards the end of the school year, this week we took time to celebrate, Thank a Teacher Day and the messages meant an enormous amount to staff.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of teachers in a child’s life.  I’m sure you still remember your favourite teacher?! They are not simply deliverers of knowledge, though they do this with care and expertise. They are mentors, cheerleaders, guides, and, often, the calm and reassuring presence that helps a child find their footing in an ever-changing world. In a prep school in particular, where the foundation for so much future learning is laid, the impact of a great teacher can be lifelong.

Every day, I am privileged to witness the dedication of our staff. It can be seen in the early mornings spent preparing lessons, in the thoughtful feedback given on a piece of work, and in the extra time taken to ensure that every pupil feels understood and supported. It is evident on the sports field, in the art room, in the music practise rooms, and in the corridors between lessons where a quick word of encouragement can make all the difference.

At BPS, we pride ourselves on knowing every child as an individual. This is no small undertaking, and it is entirely made possible by the dedication and care of our teaching staff. They understand that education is not simply about outcomes, but about nurturing character, resilience, kindness, and a lifelong love of learning. Teaching is a tough profession and teachers are often required to be super-human, whilst managing the usual challenges of life.

Thank a Teacher Day also reminds us that education is a partnership. We are fortunate to work closely with parents, who entrust us with their children’s development and support the work we do so wholeheartedly. Wednesday was a wonderful moment for our pupils and families to express their gratitude, and I cannot underestimate how much it means to staff when appreciation is shown. Whether through a kind note, a smile, or a simple “Thank you.” These gestures, though small, mean a great deal and are deeply appreciated by those who give so much of themselves each day.

In my last assembly I reminded the pupils just how impactful a “Thank you” can be and encouraged them to always remember their manners. I urged them to think about the teacher or member of staff who encouraged them when something felt difficult, or who made them laugh while you were learning something new. Gratitude is a powerful thing, it strengthens our community and reminds us of the connections that underpin everything we do.

To all our staff, I offer my heartfelt thanks. Your passion, professionalism, and commitment define the spirit of this school. You go above and beyond in ways that are both seen and unseen, shaping not only academic outcomes but the very character of the children in our care. You are the reason our pupils thrive, and I am deeply grateful for everything you do.

Thank a Teacher Day, should be not just about celebrating the role of a teacher, but the relationships they build and the futures they help to shape. In a world that can sometimes feel uncertain, the steady presence of a dedicated teacher is a profound and enduring gift.

Enjoy the sunshine and the football!
