Community Matters – Head’s Desk (05 June 2026)

As another busy week draws to a close, I have found myself reflecting on the power of community and the things that bring people together. You may or may not know that I am a lifelong, 3rd generation Arsenal Supporter. You will therefore understand that the last two weeks has been very much one of celebration and to be totally honest, sheer relief! Don’t worry, I won’t mention it again….well not too often.

Over recent months, it can sometimes feel as though we are constantly hearing stories about division. Whether through social media, the news or public debate, there often seems to be a focus on what separates us rather than what unites us. Yet every now and then, something happens that reminds us just how much we have in common.

Last weekend’s Arsenal celebrations were one such occasion. In unprecedented scenes, somewhere in the region of 1.5 million people gathered on the streets of north London to celebrate the team’s achievements, my son and I were there too! People of all ages, backgrounds, cultures and communities came together with a shared sense of pride and excitement. What struck me most was the sight of so many different people standing side by side, enjoying a collective experience and celebrating together. There was friendship, kindness, generosity, humour and a LOT of red smoke!

Sport has a remarkable ability to bring people together. It transcends backgrounds, beliefs and differences, creating a sense of belonging and shared identity. Whilst supporters may spend much of the season debating rivalries and results, moments such as these remind us that shared experiences are often far more powerful than the things that divide us.

The same is true in schools. Every day, children from different backgrounds, with different experiences, interests and talents, come together as one community. We celebrate individuality whilst recognising the values that unite us: kindness, respect, curiosity and a desire to do our very best. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths and something we are incredibly proud of. Like any successful team, our community is strongest when everyone feels valued, included and able to contribute.

As we head towards the end of another successful year, I would also like to recognise several members of staff who are embarking on exciting new chapters in their professional and personal lives.

After 25 years of dedicated service, Hayley Compton is beginning an exciting new adventure as a publican. Hayley first joined Greenacre as a Teaching Assistant and, through her commitment, talent and hard work, progressed to become a valued member of our Senior Leadership Team. Her impact on our Early Years provision has been immense. She has nurtured and developed our Nursery and Pre-school into the wonderful environment it is today, ensuring that our youngest children receive the very best start to their educational journey. As we know, those early years are crucial in laying the foundations for future learning and success, and countless children have benefited from Miss Compton’s kindness, care, expertise and leadership. We thank her for everything she has contributed and wish her every success in her new venture.

Claire Elliot-Square has decided to pursue a new career as a personal trainer. Having worked as a Learning Assistant in the lower part of the school for many years, she has been a constant source of support to both staff and children. Her positivity, encouragement and willingness to help wherever needed have made a real difference to the lives of so many members of our community. We wish her every success as she takes on this exciting challenge.

Charlotte Dickson is taking the exciting step of establishing her own childcare business, allowing her to spend more time with her own boys whilst continuing her passion for working with children. Over 10 years, both at BPS and Priory before, teaching in both EYFS and Pre Prep, she has been kind, caring, dedicated and shown endlessly positivity. Her warm smile and nurturing approach has helped many children flourish, ensuring they enjoyed a happy and successful start to their education. We wish her every happiness and success in this new chapter.

Julia Adams has secured her ‘dream role’ at Crystal Palace Football Club, the club she proudly supports. Since we opened in 2017, and before that at Priory, Julia has been an invaluable source of support to both parents, staff and me. She has seen many families move through the school, including her own children. Her professionalism, efficiency and unwavering commitment has helped ensure the smooth running of the school, whilst her warmth and approachable nature has helped build strong relationships with families over many years. We are delighted that she has secured a role that will bring new opportunities, challenges and experiences.

Alongside these exciting new ventures, we will also be celebrating the retirement of Laurie Ford after an extraordinary career in education spanning many years. Laurie has been a constant and reassuring presence in the School, supporting generations of children and families. Laurie has always combined high expectations with kindness, and genuine care for every child she has worked with. We wish her a long, happy and healthy retirement filled with new adventures, family time and opportunities to enjoy the rewards of such a distinguished career.

As a school we are proud that we have played a part in their journeys and grateful for the enormous contributions they have made to our community, as they move on to opportunities outside of education.

I am very grateful to the BPSA and all the volunteers who are working very hard to host an amazing school fair for you on Sunday – I look forward to seeing lots of you there!

Have a wonderful weekend.
