The Power of Connection – Head’s Desk (18 Sept 2025)

My blog this week is written whilst I am attending the annual Independent Schools Headteacher conference in Brighton. The conference is full of keynote speeches and seminars covering a wide range of issues impacting our sector right now. I am greatly encouraged that many of the themes and examples of best practice are already well established in our school community; it’s incredibly valuable to exchange ideas and gain insight into how schools and leaders across the country are responding to shared challenges.

Whilst the diversity of schools here is wide ranging, we are almost unanimous in our commitment to the wellbeing of the entire school community as a priority. Allowing children to thrive without unnecessary pressure, giving them time and space to play and explore and equipping them with the knowledge and skills to recognise and communicate their feelings, are top of the list. We must continue to support parents and teachers in guiding children through life’s challenges, and in normalising the understanding that things aren’t always straightforward. I feel more strongly than ever that we all need to be much more forgiving and not see challenging behaviours as any sort of failure. These are fundamental developmental stages that take time and care.

I think the most important aspect of the conference, and indeed a theme that has resonated through every single session, is the power of connections. Supporting, sharing and simply being there for one another is vital. The relationships our teachers build with children each day are more impactful than any curriculum or lesson content. Nurturing these connections requires immense time, energy, and patience, especially as teachers continue to face growing demands across the profession. As a Headteacher, I am deeply committed to fostering an environment where everyone can thrive, not just survive.

In conversations with fellow school leaders about the challenges they face, I’m reminded of how fortunate we are at BPS to have built a community where issues can be discussed openly, and solutions found collaboratively.  I am grateful for the support of our parents, the dedication and skill of our staff and immensely proud of our children. There is always something new to do, things we can improve and lessons to be learnt, but then every day is supposed to be a school day, right?

Have a lovely weekend.
